“Engineering is the art of modeling materials we do not wholly understand,
into shapes we cannot precisely analyze so as to withstand forces we cannot properly assess,
in such a way that the public has no reason to suspect the extent of our ignorance.”
-Dr. AR Dykes, British Institute of Structural Engineers, 1976
Owner
DCP is owned and operated by Steven W. Hughes, currently of Broomfield, Colorado. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1995. He has been involved with the construction industry in one form or another since 1993.
From renovating rowhomes in Philadephia to finishing his own basement in Broomfield, he’s worked practically every trade involved in residential construction to some extent. He’s humped shingles up a two-story ladder, built decks, constructed a log home, framed walls, run ductwork, sweated pipes, run wiring, hung and finished drywall, painted walls, hung doors and windows, installed trimwork, to name just a few. This valuable experience gives Steve a unique perspective because its taught him to look at the final product as a whole unit instead of a collection of pieces.
Steve is an engineer who seeks practical solutions to everyday construction problems. Many engineers see only a textbook solution and are therefore limited in their creative ability. While these types of solutions are not wrong, they are often excessive and costly. Approaching the same problem from a “whole house” perspective often allows other solutions to present themselves. Steve continually strives to come up with realistic, workable solutions that ease the construction process. And he also willingly accepts input from the men in the field. Sometimes the best and easiest solutions come from those hardworking people on the job site.
Contractor Terminology:
Contractor: A gambler who never gets to shuffle, cut, or deal the cards.
Bid: A wild guess carried out to two decimal places.
Low bidder: A contractor who is wondering what he left out.
Engineer’s Estimate: The cost of construction in heaven.
In short it stands for Dancing Coyote’s Projects. The coyote is a highly intelligent and highly adaptable animal often misunderstood and seen as a nuisance. In literature the coyote takes on many different personae: trickster, survivor, shapeshifter, but also teacher and guide. In some ways I can identify with all these aspects.
The dancing part symbolizes fun and celebration and can exhibit many attributes: strength, grace, chaos or control, speed, rhythm or many others. Dance can be as simple or as complex as you make it, it can be fun or serious, and can express everything from joy to sadness.
If you were to dance today, what would it look like and what might it express? Can you picture a dancing coyote?
My company is a reflection of myself. I strive to be the Dancing Coyote.
Q: What is the difference between Mechanical Engineers and Civil Engineers:
A: Mechanical Engineers build weapons. Civil Engineers build targets.
Here’s a quick compilation video of a few of the houses that we’ve helped design and consulted with the contractors during the build.
Some examples of our work

DCP, LLC makes contracting easy. As a long time builder and remodeler there’s no better firm out there. Owner Steve Hughes places priority on effiicient engineering from foundations to finish details. He and his staff are always there when we need creative thinking for challenging pre-existing conditions, or new site construction. His multiple disciplines are the best of all worlds when we need Engineering, Specification, Structural and Architectural Drawings, and on site visits. Steve takes weeks out of the design/build process when he can resolve our challenges and draft, print and stamp drawings. DCP keeps my job sites moving, thrills my clients with simplistic and well designed solutions. All of my crew, my suppliers, and local building inspectors have come to know and respect Steve’s and his team’s work. DCP, LLC puts our profitability first, they understand how important time and overcomplicated engineering can be the most detrimental part of a timely build. Great firm, great guy, smart engineering, and easy to do business with… I don’t say that about many people in this industry!
-Greg, Oiled Hinge Properties
I started working with Steve with DCP Engineering over 15 years ago. Immediately, I was impressed with his overall knowledge of structural engineering. I am a custom home builder. I look for my support from subcontractors that I can trust and work with confidently. He provides a structural design for foundations without compromise. When I need support, he will troubleshoot issues that arise. Together, Steve and I come up with solutions that work. He keeps to a fair price which helps to meet my clientele’s need in the same way that I do. DCP Engineering is invaluable to my business. We have worked together on many projects without complications. I will not use any other engineer for my jobs. When you have one of the best already working for you; there is no need to look anywhere else!! Don’t make the mistake of going to someone that you don’t know when you can use DCP Engineering and get the job done right the first time. You will not be disappointed!
